Engineering: Find fun engineering event
- Same general scope, record videos, have a challenge that deals with engineering
- Can be related to the CS one
- Content:
- Engineering design process
- Introduce students to the different types of engineering
- Teachengineering.org
- Have attendees build something
- Water filter (DON’T USE THIS IN THE WILD)
- Egg drop
- Structure that supports the most books (all you get is newspaper and tape)
- Think low cost options
- Usually the part that gets missed is the reflection on your solution and building a better version… days 1 and 2, they create something. Test out, assess, then what??
- Full idea: Traditional egg drop modified:
- Throw the egg as far as you can… (maybe two teams: design the launcher and design the egg protection/catch) How far can you throw it and still have in tact egg? Awarded points based on distance, crack vs full break, etc.
- Budget for materials – you can buy materials and if you return items you get some of it back… limited supply. Can get more fancy and increase the price of things as it gets rare… So you can play with the economics of this. Another factor: how much did your device cost and how long did it take you to build?
- Iterate:
- M-T: intro and build
- T: build, then test in second half and get initial scores/feedback and see everyone else’s
- W-R: redo the process
- Videos related in overall, explaining the process. Short videos describing the fundamental design process
- Put up a website where they can enter their proposed values
